Insurance is one of those things that really sucks to pay for monthly, semi-Annualy, or just once per year. Paying for something that hasn’t happened yet just feels funny to me. Even now after paying for insurance in all things in life. Our home, business, personal belongings, I even have insurance on the Wireless Phone Charger I just bought off of Amazon. So the question I had when I first got my Goldendoodle was. Should I get Pet Insurance for my Goldendoodle? After being a lifelong Cat Dude, cat’s are just so resilient and literally do have multiple lives I feel like. Dogs are different though. Lets dive into why you should or shouldn’t get Pet Insurance for your Goldendoodle family member.
The last thing you want is your dog sick or in the veterinarian office overnight or worse. Why do you need insurance? Maybe you do but lets examine why, but first how does Pet Insurance work?
GoldenDoodle Pet Insurance.
The way that Dog or pet insurance works is Pet insurance is essentially a form of health insurance for your furry friend that helps you save money on vet bills. As a pet owner, you pay a monthly premium. When medical costs come up, you’ll pay your veterinarian and then file a claim with your pet insurance company to get a reimbursement. Let’s look at some of the costs.
Smaller Dogs | As Low as $10 Per month |
Larger Dogs | Up to $120 Per Month |
So honestly its a tough decision. Because the first year I had RickyBobby my Goldendoodle Dog, he did get sick and eat stuff he wasn’t supposed to. I think I had about two total trips to the vet that were unplanned or weren’t routine type of visits. Each trip cost me around $275 for each trip we’ll say as an average. Now when I looked up Pet insurance pricing for the size and age of my dog would be about $24.99 a month. Or about $300 per year in premium. So I would of definitely saved money had I gotten the Pet insurance that first year.
Goldendoodle Ownership Year Two Medical Costs.
In the 2nd year of having our lovable Goldendoodle. He was now almost fully grown, he was getting so strong and athletic, and just a happy go lucky Goldendoodle. We honestly didn’t have any medical costs that whole 2nd year besides grooming and normal vet Checkups. So the 2nd year had I gotten insurance I would of paid the annual premium of $300 without ever using it. Paying another monthly bill on top of everything just didn’t seem like I could at the time so that 2nd year we got lucky I guess.
Other than grooming, and his normal routined checkups with his veterinarian. There haven’t been really any need for medical insurance for the second year as well. I was happy about that too, because sometimes I feel guilty paying for insurance for everything else, except my Goldendoodle. Now Keep in mind he’s a young puppy and young dogs obviously have super good healing traits, and with the Covid19 Pandemic we haven’t been as adventurous as we normally would be. Just happy I didn’t have to pay another monthly insurance bill that entire 2nd year.
Does your dog need Pet insurance?
So now we’re nearing his (RickyBobby’s) 3rd Birthday and he hasn’t had any out of ordinary medical costs so far this year either. During covid I was really worried that something would happen to RickyBobby, but again he was just fine. Now my family is different mostly because I watch every penny going in and out. I pay close attention to costs for our Goldendoodle and try my best to keep it at a minimum.
Reasons in my opinion on why you probably need Pet insurance for your Goldendoodle.
- You have a older Dog 6 years or older depending on breed.
- Lots of fun adventures, around people and areas where your Goldendoodle could get hurt.
- You know it’s within the limits of your budget. Be sure you can afford it.
- You have younger children. They can leave bad food laying around, or play too rough etc.
- The Dog has had a history of medical issues.
There are more reasons I could add but this generalized things easy for New Goldendoodle owners. I personally don’t think I need Pet insurance for RickyBobby. Like I said though that is my situation and yours may be very different. What it boils down to I think, is just shop around. Try different pet insurer’s and get quotes for your dog and type of coverage you want. I found a great Pet insurance Calculator from the ASPCA I would try.

You don’t want a sick or hurt pupppy. You just want a Goldendoodle that is healthy and sometimes a little grumpy having to take a bath. LOL thanks for reading!
